YYachts delivers first Y6

The new, nearly 20-metre yacht extends the German shipyard’s range. Several units have already been sold.

German sailing yacht builder YYachts has delivered its first Y6, a nearly 20-metre carbon sailing yacht designed to combine the comfort and flexibility of a larger yacht with straightforward handling.

The most compact model in the YYachts range, alongside the Y7, Y8 and Y9, the Y6 is intended for owners who want to sail themselves or with a small crew. Designed by American naval architect Bill Tripp, it follows the shipyard’s approach to lightweight construction and clean design.

With a hull length of 19.65 metres and a displacement of 25.9 tonnes, the Y6 is built using carbon-epoxy sandwich construction. Its stiffness and low weight are intended to deliver responsive sailing performance, particularly in light winds. The exterior combines YYachts’ low-profile coachroof and clean deck layout with a pronounced chine.

The yacht has also been designed for straightforward operation. All sheets and halyards lead aft to the twin helm stations, leaving the guest cockpit largely free of sailing hardware. A self-tacking jib, furling boom, electric winches and additional assistance systems are intended to allow the yacht to be sailed single-handed or by a couple. An engine and integrated bow thruster assist with harbour manoeuvres.

Below deck, owners can choose from several layouts, generally with three or four cabins. Options include a dedicated workspace, an additional lounge or a crew cabin forward.

YYachts worked with Danish architect David Thulstrup, who was also involved in the Y8 and the new Y7, on the interior. Together with the YYachts design team, led by Francesca Modica, he developed four concepts: Milano, Baltic, Sugi Ban and Glacier. Each provides a starting point for further personalisation.

“The new Y6 is about giving owners the freedom to enjoy a true luxury sailing yacht without the complexity traditionally associated with a yacht of this size,” said Michael Schmidt, founder of YYachts. “She combines intuitive handling with the space, comfort and individuality that define the YYachts experience.”

The first Y6 has left the shipyard, and her owner has taken her on her maiden voyage. The model is due to make its public debut later this year.
