Caterpillar updates C32 Platform

The maritime industry is undergoing significant change. Sustainability, rising energy costs and increasingly stringent environmental regulations are creating new challenges for yacht owners and shipyards alike.

Alongside conventional diesel propulsion, electric and hybrid solutions as well as alternative fuels are gaining increasing importance. At the same time, conventional diesel engines continue to evolve, delivering higher performance while becoming quieter, more efficient and producing lower emissions.

With the new C32B Marine High Performance propulsion engine, Caterpillar has further developed its proven C32 platform, offering even greater power density for demanding marine applications. Compared with the previous C32 model, the new engine delivers up to 25% more power and features an optimised base engine together with a new ADEM-VI engine control system. Comfort on board has also been improved: the upgraded fuel injection system with multi-shot technology reduces noise emissions, particularly at low engine speeds.

As environmental regulations such as FuelEU become increasingly influential, many new projects now require IMO Tier III compliance. To meet these requirements, Caterpillar has worked with the Dutch company Xeamos to develop a dedicated exhaust aftertreatment solution specifically designed for the C32B.

The engine-specific exhaust aftertreatment system reduces NOx emissions and, depending on the application, can also be equipped with particulate filtration and additional noise reduction. The turnkey solution provides full IMO Tier III compliance and is suitable for a wide range of marine applications, including yachts, high-speed ferries, crew transfer vessels, tugs and workboats.

The C32B therefore combines outstanding performance, proven reliability and enhanced operating characteristics.

As Caterpillar’s official service partner, Zeppelin Power Systems has access to the company’s global service network, providing not only technical expertise but also rapid response times and highly qualified service personnel. Whether for refits and modernisation projects, maintenance, spare parts supply, modifications, retrofits or other service requirements, our technicians and state-of-the-art technologies ensure maximum efficiency and reliability of propulsion systems.

Alongside alternative fuels and propulsion technologies, the integration of new digital technologies can further improve operational efficiency. Zeppelin+ is the central digital platform from Zeppelin Power Systems, bringing together engines, propulsion and energy systems within a scalable ecosystem to provide greater transparency, efficiency and data-driven optimisation.

Key operating parameters such as exhaust gas, coolant and lubricating oil temperatures, engine load, operating hours and fuel consumption, as well as equipment data including temperatures, fire detection and wastewater systems, are monitored in real time and can be accessed at any time via a modern web-based customer platform. This digital monitoring helps improve environmental performance and extend the service life of engines and other critical components, while enabling potential issues to be identified at an early stage.
