German yacht builder Pioneer Yachts has launched the first unit of its solar-electric PY60 catamaran. The vessel will now undergo sea trials before making its world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival
The German yacht builder Pioneer Yachts has launched the first hull of its PY60 solar-electric catamaran. The 18-metre yacht, named “Pioneer One”, marks the first completed vessel from the Stralsund-based shipyard, which was founded in 2024.
Before its public debut, the yacht will complete an extensive sea-trial programme under real operating conditions. The PY60 is scheduled to celebrate its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Yachting Festival.
Unlike many electric yachts, the PY60 was conceived from the outset as a solar-electric vessel rather than being based on a conventional motor yacht platform. According to the shipyard, the propulsion concept combines solar panels, battery storage, electric motors and diesel generators within an integrated energy management system designed to maximise autonomy and reduce dependence on shore-based charging infrastructure.
The catamaran has a top speed of 11 knots and a cruising speed of 7.5 knots. Pioneer Yachts says the concept is intended to enable extended cruising with a focus on energy efficiency and operational independence.
Founder Mike Frank plans to use “Pioneer One” as a development platform, operating the yacht himself to collect data and practical experience that will be incorporated into future production models.
The exterior design was developed by the Italian studio Cossutti & Ganz, while the interior is the work of Micheletti + Partners. The yacht has also been designed for owner operation without a professional crew. A 48-volt electrical architecture is intended to simplify onboard systems while improving safety, reliability and ease of maintenance compared with high-voltage installations.
