Dutch submersible manufacturer U-Boat Worx has received full safety approval from classification society DNV for its new Super Sub.
The manned submersible has successfully completed all required sea trials and testing and is now approved for global operation. The trials were conducted in the waters off Curaçao.
DNV surveyors were involved throughout the entire construction and testing process. All systems, components and procedures were independently reviewed to verify compliance with stringent requirements for human safety, environmental protection and structural integrity. Over the past two decades, all U-Boat Worx submersibles have been delivered with DNV classification, tailored to their respective operational profiles, including depth rating, passenger capacity and performance characteristics.
The Super Sub is designed for high-speed underwater operation, featuring 100 kW of horizontal thrust and a maximum speed of up to 9 knots. To meet certification requirements, a range of dedicated engineering solutions was implemented. The submersible is capable of operating at ascent and descent angles of up to 45 degrees, allowing controlled manoeuvring in steep underwater terrain. A high-precision sonar system continuously scans the seabed and enables automatic adjustment of the vehicle’s trajectory, ensuring safe operation down to depths of 300 metres.
With certification completed, the first Super Sub is now preparing for entry into service. U-Boat Worx offers the model both as a new build and through wet-lease arrangements. Potential applications include private superyacht operations, expedition programmes and commercial operators. With an operational range of approximately 10 nautical miles, the platform may also be suitable for search-and-rescue missions and large-area underwater survey work.
The DNV approval marks an important milestone for the Super Sub and clears the way for its commercial deployment as a high-performance, privately operated manned submersible.
