With “Simena”, ARES Yachts has delivered a 62 m ketch that combines classic sailing yacht architecture with a modern propulsion and energy concept. The vessel recently completed sea trials off Antalya, exceeding expectations in terms of speed and handling.
The yacht was developed in cooperation with Taka Yacht Design, which was responsible for both the exterior design and the naval architecture. “Simena” is currently the largest sailing yacht designed and built in Türkiye. The concept follows a traditional ketch layout with a clipper bow and bowsprit, combined with a contemporary hull form and optimised underwater appendages.
The rig is designed for performance and flexibility. The main mast reaches 59 m above the waterline, complemented by a 48 m mizzen mast. Sail area totals more than 1,600 m², including a 470 m² mainsail, 249 m² mizzen, 596 m² genoa and 356 m² staysail. During trials, the yacht achieved up to 16 kn under sail in 20 kn of wind at a 100-degree wind angle.
Handling is supported by a largely automated sail system. Seven captive winches located below deck allow trimming at the push of a button, while additional deck equipment from Antal enables efficient hoisting, reefing and furling.
From a construction perspective, the yacht combines a steel hull with a lightweight composite superstructure. This reduces overall weight and lowers the centre of gravity, contributing to improved stability and seakeeping. The design also integrates a low-profile flybridge without significantly increasing aerodynamic resistance or visual bulk.
Particular emphasis has been placed on the propulsion and energy system. “Simena” is equipped with an 882 hp diesel engine from MAN, supported by three 86 kW generator sets. In addition, a 220 kW electric motor enables low-noise manoeuvring at speeds of up to 7.5 kn.
The hybrid arrangement also allows energy recovery under sail. At speeds from around 7 kn, the propeller can be used for hydrogeneration, supplying electrical power for onboard systems. In diesel mode, the main engine can provide propulsion up to 14 kn while simultaneously generating electricity via a power take-off system.
Built to RINA class, the yacht is designed for long-range operation, with a stated range of more than 6,000 nautical miles. The combination of sail performance, hybrid propulsion and structural design positions “Simena” as a technically advanced example of large custom sailing yacht construction.
