The British company Scenic Cruise has ordered a new polar expedition ship from the 3rd Maj shipyard in Croatia. The newbuild, named “Scenic Ikon”, is to be equipped with an environmentally friendly hybrid propulsion system.
Kongsberg Maritime has been commissioned by MKM Yachts – a division of Scenic Group also based in Croatia – to supply the propulsion system.
The new 203-meter-long vessel will be the first in the series to be equipped with Kongsberg Maritime Elegance pods for the main propulsion. Delivery is scheduled for 2027.
Two Elegance 1230 pods with an output of 3,340 kW each will be installed. The pods use a permanent magnet (PM) electric motor. In combination with a fixed pitch propeller, this motor will ensure optimum hydrodynamic performance.
The hybrid energy supply is provided by an energy storage system (ESS), in which batteries can provide energy for both propulsion and hotel operations. Other equipment includes bow thrusters, electric drives, retractable stabilizing fins and various deck machinery.
Kongsberg Maritime is also supplying a navigation system that is fully integrated with dynamic positioning, maneuvering control and a forward-looking sonar. In addition, the overall package includes an integrated automation system with energy management as well as an ESD and safety management system.
