Dutch refit specialist Balk Shipyard has completed an extensive seven-month refit of the 45-metre motor yacht “Awatea”. The yacht, originally built by Hakvoort, underwent a programme of technical upgrades as well as interior and exterior modifications.
One of the most visible changes is the yacht’s new paint scheme. “Awatea”, which previously featured a custom pastel blue hull, has been repainted in Alexseal’s Poseidon Metallic Blue, combined with a white superstructure. As part of the exterior works, the yard also applied new antifouling, carried out corrosion treatment and replaced several windows. Exterior furnishings, deck doors and further details were revarnished.
The technical scope included a full overhaul of major onboard systems. Engines and generators, the watermaker, sewage treatment plant, anchor winches, pump valves and safety equipment were serviced or inspected. In addition, the HVAC system was completely upgraded.
Navigation and control systems were also modernised, including new radar units as well as updated depth and speed sensors. The yacht additionally received upgrades to its AMS and PMCS systems, alongside a new lighting concept for the interior and exterior with ambient control functionality. The galley was also fully refurbished.
“Awatea” was delivered in 2008 by Dutch shipyard Hakvoort. The yacht features a steel hull and aluminium superstructure and was designed by Cor D. Rover, with naval architecture by Diana Yacht Design.
According to Balk Shipyard, the fact that the refit was carried out in the Netherlands offered practical advantages due to the close proximity of suppliers and longstanding industry connections. The yard pointed to examples including the rapid repair of a bespoke door hinge system and the procurement of replacement equipment that had reportedly proven difficult to source elsewhere.
Following completion of the works, “Awatea” is now preparing to return to service.
