They are unique masterpieces of the ocean, maritime majesties, excellently designed works of art, and technologically and innovatively at the forefront of their respective eras. Starting February 27, 2025, the International Maritime Museum will showcase the world-famous “Superyachts”.

At the new exhibition on Deck 6 of the Kaispeicher B in Hamburg’s historic Speicherstadt, 13 selected models will be permanently exhibited. The grand opening on the evening before will welcome renowned designers and naval architects such as Martin Francis, Tim Heywood, and Theodoros Fotiadis. The event’s theme sets the tone: “Icons of Superyacht Design”.

“At the Maritime Museum, design history comes to life,” said museum director Peter Tamm. “Germany plays a significant role in the global market.” Among the highlights of the exhibition are:

  • The 1990-launched “Lady Moura”, built at Blohm + Voss in Hamburg—considered the “mother of superyachts”
  • The 2017 award-winning “Here Comes the Sun”, built in the Netherlands
  • The “Stardom”, designed by Theodoros Fotiadis in Berlin, featuring a cutting-edge hybrid propulsion system with methanol fuel cells
  • The legendary “Atlantis”, acquired in 1973 by Greek shipping magnate Stavros Niarchos, now owned by the Saudi royal family
  • A salon from the iconic Onassis yacht “Christina”

The up to 1.2-meter-large models reflect the technical, innovative, and architectural evolution of superyachts from the 1950s to today. The focus is not on the owners but on aesthetics and sophisticated design. Complementing the new exhibition sector are graphics, design sketches, and photographs.

Shipyards such as Lürssen and Abeking & Rasmussen in northern Germany now primarily rely on superyacht construction. These grand vessels, known for their groundbreaking innovations, play a crucial role in shaping the future of the maritime industry.
