Rolls-Royce and the shipyard group Lürssen have announced plans to work more closely on yacht refits.

Rolls-Royce’s Power Systems division and Lürssen Yacht Refit & Services have signed a framework agreement regulating their cooperation in the overhaul of mtu propulsion systems, further enhancing service for yacht customers.

Many of the world’s largest yachts are built by Lürssen and are often equipped with mtu propulsion systems from Rolls-Royce, the companies report. In addition to new builds, Lürssen offers discerning customers comprehensive refit solutions in the areas of overhaul, modernization, and conversion of yachts up to almost 200 meters long. Refits may be carried out during scheduled dry docking or when a new owner wants the interior redesigned to meet their preferences. Additionally, a yacht refit provides the opportunity to upgrade the propulsion system with the latest sustainable technologies, contributing to the energy transition.

New Agreement to reduce time required for overhaul

Rolls-Royce technicians and specialists from Lürssen Yacht Refit & Services have worked closely and successfully for many years on the overhaul of mtu propulsion systems on yachts—from the engine to the mtu NautIQ ship automation system. The newly signed agreement reorganizes this cooperation, accelerates processes, simplifies procedures, and defines common standards. This will significantly reduce the time needed for overhaul work on engines and propulsion systems—mostly mtu Series 4000 engines.

The framework agreement also ensures faster and more flexible deployment of Rolls-Royce specialists at the shipyard and better availability of spare parts. In addition, Lürssen technicians will receive specialized training to carry out certain work on mtu engines according to Rolls-Royce’s specified standards. This package creates the conditions for speeding up the refit process and handing the ship back to its owner more quickly.

“This partnership between two premium suppliers of yacht construction and propulsion creates unique conditions to play a major role in a highly attractive international market and is fully aligned with our strategic focus to strengthen the marine business,” said Denise Kurtulus, Senior Vice President Global Marine at Rolls-Royce Power Systems.

“Thanks to the framework agreement, our customers will continue to receive the premium service they expect from Lürssen,” adds York Ilgner, Managing Director of Lürssen Yacht Refit & Services.
