The new 70-Foot racer Mylius M72 aims to combine performance and comfort.

The M72, currently under construction by Mylius Yachts in collaboration with designer Shaun Carkeek, is positioned in the high-performance 70-foot sailing segment. The design targets competitive regatta sailing while also offering a refined interior focused on comfort and functionality — an approach Mylius has pursued in previous models.

With an inverted bow, minimalist deckhouse, and flush deck layout, the yacht is built to minimize aerodynamic and hydrodynamic drag. Technical features such as a retractable anchor system and a retractable propeller shaft are intended to further reduce resistance under sail.

The naval architecture is by Shaun Carkeek, known for designing high-performance racing yachts. His brief was to translate the Mylius design philosophy into a hull capable of top-tier performance. Below deck, the layout follows a clean, contemporary style intended to support both racing and longer cruising needs.

Powerful waterlines for performance

Built entirely at the Piacenza shipyard in Italy, the M72 is constructed from full prepreg carbon fibre. Its waterlines emphasize a clear racing heritage. The yacht incorporates dual rudders, a lifting keel, and water ballast. The modern hull with its wide stern and flared bow volume is engineered to deliver speed and maintain stability at sea. The high righting moment of the hull ensures notable steadiness even when heeled, while the 1,000-litre water ballasts allow the vessel to race effectively with a reduced crew. An optional 3.9-meter draught further enhances maneuverability in shallow ports and bays.

Sail plan designed for competition

Developed in complete synergy with the hull, the M72’s sail plan reflects a design philosophy focused on competitive performance. It features running backstays and dual backstays paired with a 29.9-meter high-modulus carbon mast supplied by Hall Spars, along with a carbon boom and bowsprit. The standard racing inventory includes a top square mainsail, J2 jib, Code 0, and A3. However, prospective owners have the flexibility to opt for smaller sails better suited to cruising if desired.

Multifunctional deck plan

The deck layout has been designed to meet the dual demands of high-performance racing and more relaxed cruising. Twin helm stations support efficient sail handling and maneuvering during competitive events, while a streamlined configuration with carefully routed lines reduces clutter and enhances operational clarity. The integration of control systems facilitates precise adjustments, making the yacht well-suited for short-handed sailing as well as extended voyages.

Interior layout and functional versatility

Inside, the cabin configuration is designed with operational functionality and weight efficiency in mind. The layout permits flexible arrangements to accommodate both racing setups and more comfortable accommodations for cruising. Strategic placement of storage areas and controls supports the vessel’s performance focus without compromising on onboard livability. Collectively, these design elements illustrate an approach that balances high-performance engineering with practical versatility for varied maritime operations.

Interiors: spaces and volumes to customise

In response to a specific request from Mylius Yachts, the interior design of the M72 has been conceived to merge refined comfort with performance. Designer Carkeek, in collaboration with Studio Parisotto+ Formenton Architetti, has developed a layout that includes three cabins with private bathrooms — a master cabin at the bow and two guest cabins aft — along with a fully equipped galley and a spacious dinette featuring a day head. In the central area, the keel box is flanked by a pullman berth on the starboard side and a study on the port side. The design emphasizes smooth surfaces and soft, rounded lines that echo the yacht’s dynamic movement, creating an interior that is both modern and sporty while using high-quality materials with careful attention to detail. At this construction stage, prospective owners can further personalise the layout, colours, materials, and fabrics.

Latest technology

On the M72, all the systems are meticulously designed and integrated through 3D software. Finite element analysis was used for the optimisation of the engineering of the structures and the hull. State-of-the-art instrumentation, telemetry and advanced electronics are part of the high-tech equipment onboard, which also utilizes a PLC system (Programmable Logic Controllers) to automatically control the ballasts and transfer 1,000 litres, from one wall to the other.

“Today there is no other 72-foot yacht like this on the market, because full carbon boats of this size, with lifting keel and water ballast, are typically designed exclusively for racing and are therefore very cramped, uncomfortable and completely empty inside,” explains Francesco Bianchi from Mylius Yachts. “With this yacht, however, Mylius Yachts wanted to elevate its concept of super-fast cruiser to a new level, creating a beautiful yacht that can deliver exceptional performance together with refined, comfortable and well-designed interiors.

Designed for those who want to enjoy the Mediterranean’s competitive sailing circuits and also relax on a cruise with family or friends, the M72 is the perfect yacht for people who do not want to choose between the adrenaline of the race and comfort. In addition, given the already very advanced stage of the works, the M72 only requires a final personal touch from the customer before it is ready to set sail – an added advantage, considering that more than two years pass between the project and the construction of such a yacht.”
