The 142-meter mega yacht ‘Alibaba’, built by Lürssen shipyard, has embarked on another multi-day sea trial. After undergoing technical adjustments near Nordenham, the yacht set course for the North Sea. Delivery is expected by the end of the year.
The 142-meter long and 20-meter wide mega yacht with the project name ‘Alibaba’ (IMO 9907196) from the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen-Nord has now set off on another multi-day sea trial. Last Thursday, technical adjustments lasting several hours were made on the Lower Weser near Nordenham, and in the afternoon, the yacht, which last completed a longer sea trial in the German Bight in September, set course for the North Sea once again. The ‘Alibaba’ is expected to be delivered to the unnamed client by the end of the year.
In December 2023, the yacht left the covered building dock at the Lürssen shipyard in Bremen-Aumund following an accident at the dock gate. In recent months, further outfitting has not been carried out at the Bremen site but at the Hamburg shipyard Blohm + Voss, which is part of the Lürssen Group.
Lürssen’s new build ranks among the largest yachts worldwide
Designed by the Argentinian design office German Frers, the ‘Alibaba’ boasts a ship’s architecture created by the German Lürssen shipyard, with interior fittings supplied by Nauta Design. The yacht features a sleek bow with distinctive exterior elements, and its design and grey color scheme are more reminiscent of a naval speedboat.
“The Alibaba is a proud demonstration of Lürssen’s ability to build yachts that meet the creative and demanding requirements of our owners,” explained Peter Lürssen, CEO of Lürssen Werft, in a recent statement.
The ‘Alibaba’ currently ranks 23rd among the largest yachts in the world and 13th among those built by Lürssen. The new vessel has four passenger decks, including a helicopter hangar on the upper deck, and was constructed with a steel hull and aluminum superstructure.
Increased efficiency with hybrid propulsion
The ‘Alibaba’ is equipped with a highly efficient diesel-electric hybrid propulsion system that combines modern diesel technology with efficient electric drive systems. It has two MAN diesel engines powering two controllable pitch propellers through individual gearboxes. These gearboxes are equipped with PTI/PTO units, which can be used for either electric propulsion or to generate electrical energy for the yacht’s operation. Additionally, the yacht features an electric azimuth pod drive that can operate in electric mode either independently or in combination with other propulsion components, allowing the yacht to reach speeds of up to 24 knots.
