German Naval Yards launches “NextGen” superyacht project

The shipyard German Naval Yards from Kiel has launched a new superyacht project together with Swisship and Pascoli International – especially for the “next generation”.

The shipbuilder – which has recently become more active again in the yacht segment after a longer phase with a stronger focus on marine projects – is cooperating with Swisship Yacht Projects and Pascoli International.

The 93-meter superyacht concept runs under the name “Koa”. It has been specially designed for the “next generation of superyacht owners”, according to a joint statement. With a beam of 14.60 m, a draft of 4 m and around 3,500 GT, the project aims to combine contemporary aesthetics with state-of-the-art hybrid propulsion technology and “exceptional on-board spaces”.

The collaboration builds on GNY’s experience in building some of the world’s most technically challenging yachts, including its work on the iconic sailing yacht “A” and the current 114m project “Elf”.

Powered by MAN

The propulsion system is based on a proven hybrid drive with two MAN 175D engines and a 450 kW PTO/PTI system. This should enable silent travel at around 11 knots and a top speed of approx. 18 knots. A 3 MW Corvus accumulator supports peak load capping, silent maneuvering and smooth anchor operation. Two retractable fins and a set of retractable magnetic steering rods are responsible for optimum stabilization at all speeds. The most striking feature in the outdoor area is the sunken aft pool on the main deck with glass floor, which illuminates the beach club below with natural daylight. The facilities on the lower deck are complemented by a water sports and diving center, a gym and spacious crew and service areas that can accommodate up to 32 crew members. The yacht offers space for two 10 m tenders, a 6.2 m crew boat, a MOB tender and various water sports equipment. To increase safety, the batteries are housed in a separate compartment.

Rino Brugge, Managing Director of German Naval Yards, emphasized: “This project represents the further development of our shipyard. With the technical successes of Sailing Yacht “A” and the construction of Project “Elf”, we are proud to present a concept that illustrates what GNY can offer for the next generation of superyacht owners. The combination of Andreas Iseli and Kristian Pascoli’s visionary design highlights our expertise, craftsmanship and ambition.”

German Naval Yards – which emerged from the surface shipbuilding operations of the former Howaldtswerke Detsche Werft (HDW) and ADM Kiel and the former Lindenau shipyard – was founded by the Privinvest Group of the Safa family of entrepreneurs. Privinvest specializes in the planning and construction of naval and commercial vessels as well as superyacht projects and has shipyard locations in Europe and the Gulf region. Since the reorganization, part of the group has been operating as CMN Naval with locations in Germany (German Naval Yards), France (CMN Cherbourg) and England (Isherwoods Newcastle). In Kiel, the infrastructure includes the largest dry dock in the Baltic region (426 m long) and the 900 t gantry crane.

Kristian Pascoli, the founder of Pascoli International, is an accomplished naval architect and yacht designer with over two decades of experience in the industry. As a qualified mechanical engineer, he managed numerous projects during his time at Espen Oeino International.

Andreas Iseli from Swisship Yacht Projects said of the new project: “The aim was to develop a design that is characterized by clarity, timelessness and high functionality. At the same time, it had to convey an impressive sense of space and create areas that flow seamlessly into one another. The seamless transition from the beach club to the two-storey lounge, combined with an advanced hybrid drive, embodies our vision of how large yachts of the future can be experienced.”
