Rolls-Royce has received its first order to supply its Tier III-compliant mtu Series 2000 engines for a yacht in the U.S.[ds_preview].
Two 16V 2000 M97L engines will be installed in a Westport 125 yacht. With an integrated SCR system, they comply with IMO III and EPA Tier 3 Recreational emissions regulations and each deliver 1939 KW. Rolls-Royce is also supplying its mtuNautIQ Blue Vision NG automation solution for monitoring and controlling the ship’s propulsion system.
The 38-meter yacht will be built at the Westport Yachts shipyard in Westport, Washington, USA.
According to Rolls-Royce, the IMO-III certification enables the Westport125 yacht to sail in particularly emission-protected areas (ECA zones), such as the coastal waters of the USA and Canada as well as the North and Baltic Seas. The manufacturer delivered the first pre-series engines of the new generation of the Series 2000 to a customer in 2021. Series engines can now be ordered. Rolls-Royce intends to gradually add further engine variants to its portfolio.
Less CO2, more safety
Rolls-Royce intends to release its 2000 and 4000 mtu engine series for sustainable fuels such as synthetic diesel (second-generation biofuels or e-diesel) from 2023, thus enabling climate-neutral operation in almost all applications. In addition to the use of sustainable fuels, the company is also building on new technologies such as CO2-free fuel cell systems. According to Rolls-Royce, smart-ship solutions that support the captain in situational awareness and navigation will also help to reduce CO2 emissions and further increase safety on board.
