This hybrid construction of “Anjelif” is the result of the experience Columbus Yachts has gained through the Sport Hybrid 40m projects, the company says. It was the first superyacht model ever to be RINA-classified with the “Hybrid Propulsion Y” notation.
The new yacht is made entirely of aluminium and is custom-built for Maria Francesca Angelini, who requested it to be equipped with technological innovations, starting from the hybrid propulsion system (diesel/electric) to the refined and sophisticated interior design.
Clean air on board the “Anjelif”
As requested by the owner, this superyacht is fitted with two distinct and highly innovative technological devices: one uses cold plasma to sanitize the air coming from the outside, which is then used for both ventilation and air conditioning; the other system sanitizes the interior environments at predefined time intervals to ensure daily safety.
The first system suppresses bacteria and viruses in the atmospheric air entering the yacht, while the second automates the sanitation of each internal room. This air sanitation system was developed with the support of the owner’s Project Engineer, Giuseppe Sole. Together with Sole, the owner also developed an air conditioning flow system that is imperceptible, except for the maximum comfort provided by the yacht’s internal climate.
The entire design of the ship reflects the owner’s vision and was supported by Architect Marco Casali of Too-Design, who created the exteriors. The naval engineering was provided by the shipyard in collaboration with Hydro Tec.
Below deck, the guest area boasts four cabins, accommodating a total of eleven guests. All guest cabins have en-suite bathrooms. Two of these cabins are equipped with an innovative 2-in-1 system, allowing the conversion of two single beds into a double bed. The other two cabins were designed to serve a dual purpose: they can function as a large VIP bedroom with an office area or as two separate spaces, partitioned by a central sliding door.
Hybrid Yacht with three modes
The Columbus Custom Hybrid 50m has a gross tonnage of 499 GT and can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots, with a range of 3,200 nautical miles at 12 knots. The yacht is powered by 2 x MTU 16V 2000 M96L diesel engines, each producing 1,939 kW, and two Kohler electric generators of 175 kW.
“Anjelif” is equipped with a hybrid system developed in collaboration with Siemens and certified by the RINA Classification Society. This hybrid system operates in three distinct modes:
- Diesel Mode: In this mode, the yacht operates conventionally, with the propulsion engines providing navigation power, while the generators supply the onboard electrical systems.
- Electric Mode: The main engines are turned off, and the generators supply power not only for the onboard electrical load but also for two electric motors, each producing 100 kW, which are directly connected to the gearboxes. This enables the yacht to navigate at a reduced and very comfortable speed of about 8 knots, ideal for night cruising, as it offers noise levels and comfort comparable to a sailing yacht.
- Shaft Generator Mode: The main propulsion engines transmit part of their torque to the electric motors, enabling them to generate electricity. In this mode, the onboard generators can be turned off, significantly reducing maintenance requirements and improving energy efficiency.
A pack of next-generation batteries dedicated to the system compensates for any power interruption during transitions, both in Diesel Mode and Shaft Generator Mode, allowing the system to switch seamlessly between power sources, whether from the diesel generators or the electric motors.
The hybrid system thus offers significant added value in terms of both propulsion and electricity generation, with:
- 2 x MTU 16V 2000 M96L engines, each producing 1,939 kW
- 2 x Electric motors, each producing 100 kW
- 2 x Generators, each producing 175 kW
- 2 x Shaft generators, each producing 100 kW
This superyacht also boasts a Green Certificate for its hybrid propulsion system and for achieving maximum emission reduction at sea. Fraser Yachts handles the charter management of this superyacht.
